Director of Engineering

Voxy is a leading web and mobile-based English learning platform that provides personalized language instruction to major educational institutions, corporations and governments in North and South America, Europe and Asia. Voxy’s proven approach draws on more than 30 years of academic research on second language acquisition. Every online course combines adaptive learning technology and authentic, real-world content to support learners’ unique needs in real time.

You’ll be responsible for day-to-day management and technical leadership that the engineering team needs, and will spend around 50% of the time hands on with engineering. At Voxy engineering and product are very closely aligned and you’ll work with the VP of Product to help define, refine and contribute to the product roadmap. Responsibility for communication between the engineering team, product team and Senior Leadership will be yours.

• Communication - we firmly believe that communication is the key to success and the way we work relies heavily on great communication skills. You should be an outstanding communicator, both verbally and written.
• Organization - our engineers practice, and love, eXtreme Programming. While you might not have actually practiced XP you should have experience in running an Agile product process, and understand why it’s the better way of doing things.
• Management - we have a team of 12 highly functioning engineers in New York and Sao Paolo. You will have 2 plus years experience managing a team of at least 5 engineers - bonus for managing or working with a remote team.
• Vision - we believe the director should also be on the ground coding with the team. You will have 5 plus years engineering experience including at least 2 years experience at the "architect" level, or higher and experience with larger scale, customer focused, web-based applications.
• Flexibility - we’re fast paced and sometimes things change. We all need to be able to shift gears quickly and deal with the unexpected. Embrace chaos. Respect - we love new ideas and discussion, and while we don’t always agree with each other our strong opinions are loosely held.
