Responsibilities
  • Manages the “Extra Alex” blog at blog.VisitAlexandriaVA.com, serving as primary editor and writer, uncovering authentic stories and trends, utilizing compelling images, interviewing local experts and editing posts by guest contributors

  • Writes, edits and provides content for a spectrum of communications needs including the website VisitAlexandriaVA.com, the annual visitors guide, advertorial articles, advertisements, and meetings and sales materials

  • Explores the city and develops relationships with Visit Alexandria member businesses, uncovering trends and story ideas

  • Contributes to social media content and messaging

  • Assists with media relations tactics, including researching and drafting press releases, fact sheets, and other materials as needed

  • Researches and compiles press clips from print, online, and broadcast publications, measuring values

  • Manages the online photo gallery and media kit

  • Assists with preparation for and execution of media tours and events

  • Assists with special projects as necessary

  • Provides general administrative support including writing and compiling monthly reports

Ideal Candidate
  • B.A. degree in communications, PR, journalism, writing or related field

  • Effective storyteller with outstanding written and oral communication skills

  • Positive energy and excellent interpersonal skills; ability to interact with a wide variety of people, both internally and externally at all levels

  • Excellent project management with a strong attention to detail

  • Demonstrated initiative, ownership and time management

  • Ability to creatively approach problems and assigned projects

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and social media platforms; familiarity with Wordpress preferred; SEO training preferred;

  • basic Photoshop skills preferred

  • Photography skills a plus

  • Familiarity with Alexandria a plus
