Since its founding in 1986, RMR has grown from managing one public company with less than $100 million in assets to seven public companies with approximately $25 billion in assets as of June 30, 2014.
The Senior Director of Marketing & Communications is a new position and an exciting opportunity to help redefine a large 30-year-old company with broad and unique capabilities. The Senior Director will lead efforts to define Reit Management & Research LLC’s (RMR) corporate brand and brand strategy as it changes its name and prepares to go public later this year. As part of his/her brand strategy responsibilities, the Senior Director will drive marketing, communications, awards, events, charitable giving, and community service plans and programs to support the brand. This highly visible role will report to the Vice President of Investor Relations who in addition to investor relations oversees corporate communications, marketing, media relations; and has a leadership role in the areas of Governance engagement and capital markets.
The Senior Director will be expected to build strong partnerships with internal departments to advance their work. Internal partners include: Investor Relations, Real Estate Services (RES), Asset Management, Human Resources, and Information Technology. In addition to the RMR brand and brand strategy, the Senior Director will be responsible for establishing brand standards and ensuring they are applied and maintained through all operations. The ideal candidate will bring strong cross-disciplinary branding, marketing and communications experience, thought leadership and management capabilities to impact how we develop and tell “the RMR story.” This candidate will also contribute significantly to the branding and marketing efforts of RMR-managed companies.
Brand Development/Strategy and Marketing
- Work with a broad set of constituents to identify RMR brand strengths, differentiators, and detractors. Constituents include: the RMR executive team and present/potential employees; shareholders, analysts and bankers; and real estate tenants and brokers; and, the communities where we operate.
- Develop and gain executive buy-in for the company brand and branding strategy, and programs supporting the brand.
- Identify strategic opportunities to raise brand awareness from both a national and local market standpoint.
- Update and manage RMR and its managed REITs’ external websites; make improvements to website elements to reinforce the brand.
- Take actions to implement the RMR branding strategy through various outlets, such as the RMR external and internal websites, marketing and communication collateral, print media, and social media.
- Collaborate with internal business partners to prioritize and execute brand building events and other activities.
- Ensure award, community service and charitable giving programs are aligned and support the brand.
Employment Brand
- Extend the RMR Brand to tell RMR’s story as an “Employer of Choice.”
- Support Human Resources in strategically positioning RMR as a talent destination for top industry talent, including providing input and guidance on a national recruitment marketing campaign and social media approaches to attract key talent to RMR
Corporate Communications (External and Internal)
- Develop external communication plans, press releases, and talking points for use with media.
- Counsel senior management on media issues, potential strategies, and tactics.
- Working closely with Human Resources, develop and execute RMR’s employee communications plan.
Other Responsibilities
- Develop and manage branding, marketing and communications annual operating budgets.
- Support other firm-wide initiatives and ad hoc projects as needed.
- Demonstrated success in developing and directing companywide strategic, branding, marketing, and communications efforts, specifically, planning and implementation.
- Proven experience counseling executives about thought leadership, branding, marketing, communications and public relations matters.
- Experience working within an organization with varied operations and multiple geographic locations.
- Ability to work well within a publicly held company which continues to be run by its entrepreneurial owners/founders.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, both oral and written.
- Strong project management skills with proven ability to establish and meet changing priorities and deadlines on multiple projects.
- Minimum of 10-15 years’ experience in a marketing/communications role (public relations, media, brand management, corporate communications) with at least 5 years in a director/management role. Financial, Commercial Real Estate, REIT or Asset Management industry experience a plus.
- Versatility, flexibility, enthusiasm and the ability to drive initiatives that support business goals.
- MBA or a Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) required; a concentration in Marketing and Communications preferred.
- Public company experience preferred.
