About Queens Library

Responsibilities
  • Oversees centralized responsibilities for library collections both physical and virtual from collection development, acquisition, metadata, maintenance and support to deacquisition.

  • Ensures continuous delivery of day-to-day ITD services – internal and external -- through oversight and monitoring of ITD systems performance.

  • Oversees technology capital projects including systems and IT infrastructure in new or renovated facilities.

  • Develops policies/workflows/models to support e-content initiatives and implementation of the Virtual Library.

  • Participates in developing recommendations for overall system objectives and policies and provides strategic and system-wide leadership in the development of long range and operating plans, objectives, and budget for Information Technology, Metadata Services, and the Virtual Library. Keeps current with trends and issues in the library & IT industry, including current technologies and advocates for breakthrough technologies that encourage support and efficiencies at all levels in the organization.

  • Coordinates and facilitates consultation with stakeholders to define business and system requirements for new technology implementations.

  • Defines and communicates corporate plans, policies, and standards for the organization for acquiring, implementing, and operating ITD systems.

  • Develops department budget. Monitors and manages funding that has been allocated to the department and effectively makes cost/benefit recommendations and decisions to maximize the use of available funding and resources.

  • Manages all IT related federal, state, city or other fund budgets, both expense and capital and prepares narrative reports for stakeholders.

  • Supervises, trains, coaches and evaluates the work of managers/directors involved in overseeing work and personnel of assigned departments.

Ideal Candidate
  • Bachelor’s Degree required, MLS or Master’s in a related field preferred.

  • Minimum of 7 years of management experience and leading technology services/initiatives.

  • Demonstrated ability to apply IT in solving business challenges and creating service opportunities.

  • Ability to use, understand and influence the highest levels of current and emerging workplace and other technology including library technology systems and networks, security and infrastructure, system integration, technical architecture, hardware, email, internet, databases, e-Media, social media and other software.

  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience in the development project lifecycle and the ability to manage multiple projects, organize workload and integration effectively and efficiently to accommodate numerous deadlines.

  • Must have the ability and experience in managing and supervising all levels of staff, including ability to lead and manage a multi-site operation. Ability to communicate, work effectively and leverage unique strengths of a diverse staff in order to accomplish organizational and department goals and objectives.

  • Excellent organizational, oral and written communication skills are required.

  • Experience in planning and budgeting required, preferably in a large organizational setting.

  • Knowledge of library content/collection and technology trends, best practices and industry standards.

  • Ability to make complex technology issues understandable to others.

  • Can identify opportunities for synergy and integration and apply appropriately to ensure effective delivery of services.

Preferred:

  • Experience in a large, multi-facility public library or academic setting is highly preferred.
