Operations Research Scientist
Grubhub
(Chicago, Illinois)Grubhub is the nation's leading online and mobile food ordering company dedicated to connecting hungry diners with local takeout restaurants. The company’s online and mobile ordering platforms allow diners to order directly from more than 45,000 takeout restaurants in over 1,100 U.S. cities and London. Every order is supported by the company’s 24/7 customer service teams. Grubhub has offices in Chicago, New York and London.
The Operations organization is currently looking to staff a think tank of optimization and efficiency experts. As our footprint in food delivery expands, you will be immediately tasked with developing algorithms to automatically optimize driver dispatch and routing. You will be challenged to build these models to simultaneously ensure an unsurpassed diner and restaurant experiences, while ensuring costs are held in line. You’ll work cross-functionally across the technology, product, operations, marketing, sales, and finance to ensure a holistic model that considers all aspects of the business.
- Model delivery operations and develop simulation models
- Determine and assess the right short and long term data infrastructure to evaluate effectiveness
- Develop optimization algorithms to deliver operational efficiencies and diner/restaurant satisfaction
- Monitor metrics and drive continuous improvement in measurement systems and dashboards.
- Identify forward-looking capabilities required to continue to drive next generation operations and delivery.
- Ph.D. in Operations Research, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science or a related field. At-least 3 years industry experience with demonstrated business impact in reducing transportation and inventory costs through the application of the optimization models
- Knowledge in the following: theories of optimization including linear programming, mixed-integer programming and network modeling.
- Experience communicating with both technical and business people. Ability to speak at a level appropriate for the audience. Experience applying these skills in both academic teaching environment and a business setting is a plus.
- Experience designing and implementing optimization models for inventory, network design and other characteristics of supply-chain (e.g., staff scheduling, vehicle routing, and facility location). Experience with leveraging such models to provide guidance for strategic and tactical business decision making.
- Experience implementing models and analysis tools through the use of high-level modeling languages (e.g. AMPL, Mosel, R, Matlab).
- Experience prototyping and developing software in traditional programming languages (C++/ Java/ Python/Perl ) a plus.
Got These? Even Better:
- Demonstrated experience designing/building forecasting systems and business metrics
- Experience applying forecasting and data mining techniques in an industrial setting
- Proficient with SQL and experience with very large-scale data. The ability to manipulate data by writing scripts (Perl, Ruby, Groovy).
- Experience teaching and mentoring other scientists and analysts
- Statistical analysis, machine learning, and data-modeling in a database environment a plus.
